In Brief

Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant (pictured) was guest of honour at the 20th anniversary celebrations for local IT firm First Class Technologies. Also at the celebrations for the Britannia

Enterprise Park based firm was David Benford, of Blackstage Forensics, who addressed guest on the perils and pitfalls of IT security. First Class Technologies managing director

Richard Hinton said: “Times were very different 20 years ago when I first started the business. Supplying hardware was the primary function whereas for the past several years it’s been more service-focused. However, there are some basic rules that still exist, including ‘excellent customer service’. “Many of these attributes have seen us

through the tough times, but as a team we continue to work hard and are now reaping the benefits as demonstrated when we recently picked up the Chamber of Commerce Business Award for ‘Best Business’ across the Lichfield, Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield area.”

Tamworth’s Holiday Inn Express Hotel is under new ownership. The 120 bedroom lake- side hotel is now part of Beaconsfield-based Starboard Hotels. Starboard now has 13 hotels, including five

operated under the Holiday Inn Express brand. Holiday Inn Express is a thriving hotel

offering high levels of comfort and customer service for guests including the business traveller, tourists and visitors. Richard Mckie, hotel general manager, said:

“We know Starboard will continue to build on the great work we have achieved over the past few years and support our team here as we continue to forge important links with local businesses, leisure developments, charitable organisations and the community in general.”

Tamworth-based Pickerings Solicitors has doubled the size of its wills and probate team in response to an increased demand for private client services. The firm now has a team of four specialist

solicitors, led by Emma Harrison. Sue Hatton, a director at the Bonehill Road

firm, said: “Over time, family structures have become more complex. Multiple marriages are increasingly common and couples are faced with the question of how their assets may be safeguarded to benefit their children. “It has become more important than ever to

have a well-drafted will to address these issues. Lasting powers of attorney are also recommended. “We are experiencing increased demand from

clients wishing to safeguard their hard-earned assets for future generations. Many are fearful that their home and assets may be eroded, for example to pay for long term care bills. We have a highly experienced team who offer a comprehensive service to address the needs of our clients and recognise that every individual or family may have different priorities.”

Light up the night: the spectacular Lichfield Lumiere

New accolade for festive illuminations

The spectacular illumination show, which brought Lichfield Cathedral and the city centre to life over the festive period, has been crowned ‘Best Staffordshire Event 2017’ by readers of Staffordshire What’s On. The Lichfield Lumiere – funded by Lichfield

Cathedral and the Lichfield Business Improvement District (BID) and created by Luxmuralis and Peter Walker, the cathedral’s artist-in-residence – was handed the prestigious title in the Staffordshire What’s On Readers Awards. The stunning event, which took place last

December, incorporated the iconic ‘Cathedral Illuminated’ display as well as additional projections across the city, while in addition, through Advent and Christmas, the 10,000 Angels project was installed in the cathedral’s south transept. Through the 10,000 Angels project, Lichfield

Cathedral worked with more than 7,500 children. 25,000 people flocked to see the illuminations.

Adrian Dorber, the dean of Lichfield Cathedral,

said: “We are delighted to receive this award and our thanks go to all who attended and voted for this wonderful event. We look forward to welcoming visitors back in 2017.” Artist Peter Walker said: “It’s especially

rewarding for the artistic team, the cathedral staff and the volunteers to know that so many people have voted for the Lichfield Lumiere as the number one event in Staffordshire for 2017.” BID chairman Paul Maddox said: “The BID is

committed to providing a commercially successful Christmas for the city and feedback was incredibly positive with many restaurants and bars reporting they were at capacity during the week.” Lichfield Cathedral is presenting a varied calendar of events this spring, such as a performance from world-famous chorister Aled Jones, and ‘Mr Turner Comes To Lichfield’, an exhibition celebrating the works of the acclaimed Romanticist painter JMW Turner.

Flexible parking goes on trial

Views are being sought on a three-month trial that is running in Lombard Street car park in Lichfield, which gives visitors more flexible ways to pay for their parking. The trial, which is being carried out

by Lichfield District Council and the town’s Business Improvement District (BID), is giving drivers the option of paying by credit or debit card. The new ‘Check In Check Out’ system

also allows customers to only pay for the amount of time they stay at the car park. It works by drivers checking in at a pay and

display machine with their card. They can choose a set length of time to park, or can choose to check out again when they return to their vehicle. This means they are only charged the actual amount of time they are using the car park for.

Richard King, director of place and community

at Lichfield District Council, said: “Visitors to our car parks have long been asking for an easy way to pay for their parking by card and often tell us they want more control over how long they stay. We think the Check In Check Out system answers both of these requests.” David Tomalin (pictured), Lichfield BID manager, said: “We know that

shoppers get frustrated if they have to stop

what they are doing and rush back to their cars because the time on their parking ticket is up. “This is why we’re working with the council to

trial the pay on exit system. It will mean visitors will be able to enjoy all that the city centre has to offer without having a time limit on their day.” The trial will run until mid-June.
