Appointments Appointments Who’s moving up & who’s moving on Abdul Rashid with Denise Shearsby


Eventmasters Aston Villa’s former head of commercial operations Abdul Rashid has joined Birmingham- based corporate hospitality specialists Eventmasters. Rashid was commercial manager


at Villa Park for more than two decades prior to leaving in 2005. During his time with the club he


headed up the commercial operation and maximised income through activities which included brand identity, sponsorship activities, the sale of executive boxes and hospitality facilities, along with other commercial ventures such as broadcasting, catering, licencing and stadium hire. Since leaving Aston Villa, Rashid


has continued to work in sports industry, both on rights holder and client side. He said: “Eventmasters are


already a very successful company with a strong and much envied reputation of offering excellent client service and corporate hospitality across a broad spectrum of sport and leisure.”


Cushman & Wakefield Cushman & Wakefield have appointed Tim Harrison as a partner to the rating team in their Birmingham office. He joins from Telereal


Trillium where he led the Rating team, providing advice to a number of large corporate clients. At Cushman, he will advise occupiers generally on rating matters. Mike Flecknoe, partner in


Cushman & Wakefield’s Rating team, said: “With over 20 years’ experience, Tim is a key appointment for Cushman & Wakefield’s rating team and will increase the range of specialist rating advice we are able to offer our clients. His appointment confirms our position as a leading rating consultant.”

Thomasons Afzal Suman has joined Thomasons’ Birmingham team as an associate, strengthening the civil and structural engineering firm’s presence in the Midlands. Afzal is a chartered structural engineer with 17 years’ professional experience gained in the UK and the Middle East. He has extensive experience in

Malmaison Birmingham Malmaison Birmingham has checked into 2017 with some key promotions and appointments. Damian Goom, who joined the


leading brand as general manager in February 2014, has been promoted to senior general manager. As well as overseeing the Birmingham hotel, he is now responsible for the group’s Brighton, Cheltenham, Oxford and Reading hotels, working alongside their general managers to maintain peak performance. Damian said: “My new role is a


fantastic opportunity to build on the foundations we’ve shaped at Malmaison Birmingham.” Alongside Damian’s promotion, Malmaison Birmingham has appointed a new guest relations manager, Irina Alecu.


Shakespeare Martineau Shakespeare Martineau has expanded its real estate team in Birmingham with the appointment of a specialist partner. Andrew Mellor joins the firm


from Gateley PLC, where he spent 10 years acting for commercial developers, landlords, tenants, investors and large corporates. Prior to his time at Gateley,


Andrew spent several years at Wragge & Co. In his new role, Andrew will focus


on building the commercial development practice in Birmingham and the West Midlands, while further enhancing the service for existing developer clients. Andrew will be based at


Shakespeare Martineau’s 400- strong office in Colmore Square.

Institute The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has named Dilshad Sheikh, the dean of the business school at University College Birmingham (UCB), as the new chair of its West Midlands board. She has been appointed for a


two-year term, and said: “Given that I have grown up in the West Midlands region, lived here for over 40 years, studied here and now hold a strategic leadership position, I am very much looking forward to making a positive contribution with measurable impacts to the region. “ It is a privilege to have been


given the opportunity to chair and lead the CMI regional board.” CMI is the chartered professional


body for management and leadership.


GVA Experienced hotels specialist James Williamson has joined as a director in the Midlands office of the national retail, hotels and leisure team at real estate adviser GVA. A qualified chartered surveyor


and RICS Registered Valuer, James has amassed nearly 20 years of experience in the hotels and leisure sector, with roles at Forte Hotels Group, Edward Symmons Hospitality & Leisure, and JLL Hotels. James originally joined GVA in


2009 as a London-based director in the hotels and leisure team. James said: “GVA has a great


representation and strong track record in the hotel sector and I’m looking forward to growing both the valuation and agency elements of the business.”
