What does your company do? SOTI is the world's most trusted provider of Enterprise Mobility Management solutions, with more than 17,000 enterprise customers and millions of mobile devices managed worldwide.
How did it all start? SOTI started in our CEO’s basement in Canada in 1995. I worked for its customer and was so taken with the team’s passion and drive, I joined the business.
What’s your greatest achievement so far? Growing the European arm of the business from one man to a team of over 50 people and attracting like-minded individuals that love technology as much as we do.
What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? I thought a predecessor to the smartphone would dominate the industry and that SOTI should support the technology. As the device didn’t take off, I was glad my efforts were refused!
What keeps you awake at night? We are moving to new offices, so I think about the best way to create an environment which fosters passion balanced with a great social aspect for the business.
What has surprised you most in your job? Working with people passionate about technology and seeing their enthusiasm attracting others to SOTI. Every individual adds value to our business and culture.
What advice would you give to someone starting out? Believe in what you are building or selling then don’t take no for an answer. Do not compromise and return from knock backs. This is your career, not a job.
Which business do you most admire? Our customer, Just Eat. For its passion, drive and retaining that start up buzz as a global business. I admire and respect the growth and expect to follow in its footsteps!
What exciting projects is your business working on? We’re working on some incredibly innovative projects which are using the Internet of Things (IoT) to transform and reshape tomorrow’s business strategies.
What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? We’ve spent a number of years focused on our growth across EMEA and now want to meet like- minded professionals we can network with. As we are based in Birmingham, we are keen to work more closely with local universities, schools and technology groups. SOTI has helped companies
across the globe with their mobility management needs and we would like to share this with local companies; membership to the Chamber will help us achieve this.

Robert Ball Senior Private Banker Weatherbys Private Bank
Weatherbys Bank backs passive investment for wealth management clients
As a family-owned private bank, Weatherbys wants to build long-term – even multigenerational – relationships by putting clients’ interests first.
Unfortunately, the asset management industry tends to put its own interests ahead of those of its clients. Many people pay high fees to managers who are really closet trackers, with performance never deviating far from a market index. What is more, even if managers outperform the markets for a while, the evidence strongly suggests that these sunny periods generally do not last. With the constant headwind of fees – paying a 2% fee every year for ten years costs you almost 20% of your money – it is no surprise that most portfolios underperform. It is unlikely your manager will beat the market, but it is certain you will pay them to try!
Our job is to give our clients the best advice, which means focusing on things that are known to work: diversification, avoiding trying to time markets and keeping fees low. We put a simple strategy in place, and help our clients to deal with the emotional ups and downs of riding out any market squalls. We are convinced that, over the long term, this way of doing things will mean better outcomes for our clients, and relationships that last for generations.
