Firm tops PCT filings in Europe

Intellectual property services provider Marks & Clerk has come top in ‘Managing Intellectual Property’s’ annual survey of major international patent filers in Europe, putting it ahead of all other European Patent and Trade Mark Attorney firms. Marks & Clerk filed 627

Clerk filed 419 PCT applications, more than 170 more than the next most active PCT filer in the country. Robin Oxley, managing partner of

A £14m disability and community centre in Selly Oak is to open in the summer. The centre – known as TouchBase Pears – is being

opened by national disability charity, Sense, and will provide specialist services to people who are deaf/ blind, have sensory impairments or other needs. The centre will also provide services for the surrounding

area, including a café, conference and training facilities, arts and performance area and a community space. The centre is creating up to 130 new jobs. On 6

March, a mass walk will take place in Selly Oak to raise awareness of the centre’s upcoming opening, and to engage with the local community.

Sense service users, families, schools and local

businesses are being invited to participate. Sense chairman John Crabtree said: “TouchBase

Pears will be a real asset for Birmingham. This ambitious new centre will combine specialist support for people with sensory impairments and complex needs, with services that will benefit the whole community. Over one hundred new jobs will be created as the regeneration of Selly Oak continues. I hope as many people as possible can join us for the

sensory walk in March, as we look to bring the community together and raise awareness of this wonderful project.”

Marks & Clerk’s Birmingham office, said: “An application filed under the PCT system begins the process of obtaining patent protection. “PCT applications are a very cost

effective way to keep the territorial options open for a company filing a patent application for their invention, particularly where the exact countries in which they want to seek protection are not finalised, or where a company wishes to defer the cost of overseas patent protection for as long as possible. “In short, PCT applications can

help with short term cash flow and also allow more time to decide where best to seek protection.”
