Eurowings launch service to Vienna
Birmingham Airport and German low-cost carrier Eurowings are launching a new service to Vienna. The six times weekly operation to Austria’s capital city – launching on
26 March - is in addition to Eurowings’ current programme to Dusseldorf and Hamburg. All services are planned with an A320 aircraft configured to 180 seats. Eurowings is part of the Lufthansa Group, further strengthening its
presence at Birmingham Airport. William Pearson, aviation director for Birmingham Airport, said:
“Eurowings is an important partner of Birmingham Airport as it already serves two routes to Dusseldorf and Hamburg which are hugely important to the Midlands Engine and the region’s leisure market. “We’re very pleased that the airline will be launching a brand new route
from Birmingham to Vienna this summer and I’m sure that it will be welcomed by customers looking for somewhere exciting to explore for leisure, as well as offering a convenient schedule for passengers travelling on business.” Eurowings is headquartered in Cologne and serves a network of
domestic and European destinations as well as some long-haul routes. Ivan Orec, manager network development and airport relations for
Eurowings, said: “We are pleased to announce a new Birmingham link to Vienna. “The new route will operate six times a week from the end of March
2017, in addition to our 18 weekly services to Düsseldorf and three weekly services to Hamburg. “We will continue to grow our network and to bring more passengers
through Birmingham Airport.” Vienna is the largest city in Austria and the country’s cultural,
economic, and political centre. It lies in the east of Austria on the Danube River and its history has been shaped by residents including Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud. The city is also known for its Imperial palaces, contemporary buildings
and museums. Flights from Vienna will arrive in Birmingham at 6.45pm on Monday,
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 7.05pm on Tuesday and 2.30pm on Sunday. Flights to Vienna will depart Birmingham at 7.30pm on Monday
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 7.45pm on Tuesday and 3.10pm on Sunday.

New look for West Midlands trains
A new look for commuter trains in the West Midlands has been unveiled for when management of the regional network is put into local hands later this year. The new livery has been unveiled
by West Midlands Rail (WMR), a consortium of 14 local authorities which together with the Department for Transport (DfT) will jointly manage the local network from October this year. Management is currently the sole responsibility of central Government. Two train companies, Abellio and
Govia, are bidding for the eight- year franchise to run local services. The finer details of the new livery
will be agreed with the franchise winner but the design is expected to be closely modelled on the images released this week.
Cllr Mark Winnington, chair of
WMR and Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for economic growth, said: “We felt it was important to have a distinct identity for local trains and we are pleased the DfT feels the same way. “We believe that having this level
of involvement in the management of our local network will bring real benefits not just for passengers but also for local businesses.” Improvements set to be delivered
under the new franchise include extra capacity, more frequent services and free Wi-Fi. The enhancements have been included in the Invitation to Tender document which sets out the minimum specifications that need to be met by whichever train operator wins the franchise.
