Mayoral candidates talk environment
A panel featuring three West Midlands mayoral candidates debated the future of the built environment with an audience of civil engineers, planners, architects and surveyors recently. The panellists included
Conservative mayoral candidate Andy Street, UKIP’s Pete Durnell, and Beverley Nielsen, the Lib Democrat candidate. The debate was organised by
various professional bodies, including the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Mr Street supported the importance of the built environment and said: “We should take pride in our built infrastructure at both macro and micro levels.” One of Beverley Nielsen’s key
concerns was the green belt, which she said was a challenge where the politicians should be in tune with public opinion. She added that a ‘collaborative approach’ was necessary to achieve the best for the region. One of Pete Durnell’s concerns
was the amount of money available to deal with the region’s issues, and said: .“I genuinely believe that the new mayor is going to need to fight for every penny of investment, and keep a tight rein on the WMCA.”
