Business Hub EC joins cancer fight

The European Commission (EC) has launched a new initiative to cut deaths caused by exposure to cancer-causing chemicals. The European-wide initiative is aimed at

slashing the death toll from work-related cancer, which currently kills more than 100,000 people each year. The project will see a greater focus on helping

small businesses in particular to meet their obligations in this area, and at the same time efforts will be made to scale back the amount of paperwork generated by the issue. Among the measures being taken by the EC

will be the introduction of exposure limits for an additional seven chemicals known to cause cancer. This follows a similar directive last May, which was aimed at 13 other carcinogens. In all, an astonishing 20 million workers in Europe are exposed to one of these 20 chemical agents. The new initiative is aimed at reducing the

exposure of workers to all of these agents, which in turn will lower the death toll caused by cancer-causing chemicals in Europe. The new initiative is being backed by Midlands

based Europe Direct Birmingham. Craig Biffen, from the Europe Direct Birmingham team, said:

Craig Biffen: health and safety is important

“It is important that any company involved with using chemicals in their business ensure that they have a robust health and safety policy in place no matter what the size of their organisation. “The time and money spent on putting these

in place will prove to be invaluable to them in the long run.”

Warning over fake domain name scams

Birmingham businesses are being warned about being contacted by fraudsters attempting to sell them fake internet domain names. The crooks ring up claiming to be from the

‘Trade Marks Intellectual Property Office’, who then try and dupe them into buying these domain names. The scam is being actively investigated by

National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB). The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) said

anyone who thinks they are being scammed should report the matter to Action Fraud, the online reporting portal for all instances of alleged fraud. Craig Biffen, from Chamber-based Europe

Direct Birmingham, said: “It is really important for companies when someone contacts them regarding the purchase of domain names that you carry out due diligence on them. “Unfortunately these sort of scams do occur,

and the companies involved are very clever with their sales story and who they claim to be. If you do get approached and are unsure if it is genuine, please contact the Europe Direct Birmingham team here at the Chamber and we will investigate further on your behalf.”
