Forthcoming Events

By Keith Nicol

There’s something for everyone this month. Let’s start with a new version of an old feature that has been missing off the local calendar for almost a decade with the return of the This Is Spain’s Association and Lifestyle Day. The event takes place on Tuesday 24th May at the Torrevieja Christian Fellowship which is located opposite Dia and beside the new Mino’s at Avda. de las Cortes Valencianas, 68, 03183 Torrevieja, Alicante. The Associations Day is a free exhibition featuring dozens of local clubs, associations, sports, cultural and performance groups plus a few select partners offering advice and information about living in Spain. The show is open from 10am until 3pm and admission is free.

One of the must visit attractions this month is Torrevieja’s May Fair which is known this year as the “Feria de Sevillanas” and will be held in the port area this week, ending on Sunday the 8th. This year’s Feria will feature local dance schools, the Coro Jose Hódar and the Unión Musical Torrevejense. This year’s featured artists are on Thursday 5th “Pura Sangre”, on Friday 6th “Raya Real” and on Saturday they will pay tribute to Rocio Jurado on the tenth anniversary of her death and Sunday 8th will feature performances by Jose Manuel “El Mani”. The Feria will also feature the traditional horses and carriages and Rociera Mass will be sung by the choir of the Brotherhood of Rocio of Torrevieja on Saturday.

The town of Biar, which is situated inland in the Vinalope Valley will be honouring their patron saint during their Moors and Christians Fiesta. The celebrations start on Tuesday 10th May and continue until Friday 13th May. The Grand Parade takes place at 5pm on Tuesday the 10th.

Murcia Tres Culturas Festival

For the 17th time the city of Murcia is hosting the Festival of the Three Cultures, or in Spanish Fiesta de Tres Culturas, from Friday 13th to Saturday 28th May. The programme is a mix of music, dance, concerts, cinema, exhibitions and art from all over the world. The aim of the celebration is to create peace and harmony between people of different creed and culture and to send out a message of solidarity, respect and tolerance. All of the performances are free to go and watch; it is just a question of turning up early enough to get seats.

A special “Mother’s Day” concert will be performed by Union Musical Torrevejense Youth Band on Friday 6th May in the Palacio de la Música, Torrevieja’s Music Palace Auditorium, at 8pm. It’s a show for the entire family but space is limited so be there early.

The fabulous International Auditorium in Torrevieja will feature the first Concert Band Music Festival on Saturday May 14th at 8pm. It’s a free concert and on stage with three of the area’s top bands performing. On stage will be Just Brass Band”, “Musical Association of Los Montesinos” and the award winning “Union Musical Torrevejense”. Admission is free by ‘invitation’ and you can pick up your “free tickets” in the headquarters of the Union Musical Torrevejense, inside their office inside the Music Palace on the 1st floor between the hours of 6pm to 8pm from Monday to Friday or downstairs in the Music Palace cafeteria all day long.
