Page 27 Put some sparkle in your lives….

Your GEM of a magazine By Fiona Jennison

A lady entered a jeweller’s and said, “You sold my husband a diamond ring yesterday but it’s the wrong size.” “No problem madam” said the jeweller. “We can easily adjust the ring.” “You don’t understand” replied the lady. “The thing is you sold him a 1 ct. and I take a 5 ct….”

I tried this myself recently in the Montenegro Joyeros in Denia. Unfortunately I got no diamond upgrade (bit difficult without an actual diamond) but I did get a big laugh from the extremely charismatic owner, Enrique, his English wife Nicola, and their daughter Eva. And it was worth a try, as they stock certificated diamonds ranging in value from 500€ to 30,000€, sourced by their team of brokers from all over the world. And they are without doubt the experts in precious stones here, with Enrique having 40 years of experience and a diploma from the Spanish Diamond Community.

Enrique is something of a local legend, having opened the very first boutique jewellers in the whole of Spain in 1970 followed by a fleet of shops in Denia over the years. He was a radical jewellery designer in his younger years and his scrap books are full of articles about ahead-of-their-time designs that won international awards, innovative exhibitions including one on a train, and a proudly kept copy of an order form from Harrods.

Montenegro are well placed to serve the English community here with fluent English spoken in each of their three current shops - two in Denia, and one in the Ondara shopping centre (addresses on advert). For many famous brands you need to go to Montenegro as they have exclusivity in the area for all but two in the advert. Also in-house they have workshops for repairs or to replicate any necklace or bracelet you have seen anywhere – just photograph, print or sketch it.

Their (exclusive) best seller is the brilliantly conceived, affordable luxury brand Pandora. Unless you’ve been living in a cave or more likely on the golf course for the last decade, you will know Pandora. If you don’t (gentlemen) then you should, as you will never again have to scratch your little heads over what to get your better half, your mother or your daughters at Christmas. Anthropologists and psychologists have long defended a woman’s need for jewellery. It’s the peacock thing; an innate need for natural splendour that we have apparently. All perfectly natural…. And you never know boys, you may be rewarded with a rather nice watch from Montenegro in return.

Enrique is passionate about jewellery and dedicated to his shops. I asked him if he’d ever been robbed (yes, that’s me subtly casing the joint) and he told me that he once wrestled a robber who had put a gun to his head to the ground. Yes, with a gun to his head. Although the robber had slightly stuffed up by forgetting that he’d already cocked the gun outside the shop, and then tried to cock it again when inside. Schoolboy error apparently that gave Enrique his chance. Thankfully, because Enrique is one of the nicest men you could ever meet.

Anyway the robber won’t be back at Montenegros because he got ten years. But I’ll be going regularly, for a look at the ever changing stock, especially as Enrique did let slip (when probed for gossip) that the drop dead gorgeous tennis player David Ferrer is a client…..

Although David, if you’re reading, as Joan Rivers said “I don’t exercise. If God had meant me to bend over he would have put diamonds on the floor.” Match point.
