Classic Claris Cliff
Art Deco Jazz
Moving on from the early 20th century, the interwar years were dominated by the cool, stylish allure of the Art Deco period where the soft fluid curves hardened into geometric forms inspired by Egyptian, Aztec and Native American cultures. This was a time of 1930’s films, jazz music, luxury oceanliners and grand picture palaces, when travel by plane, train and automobile was novel and thrilling. The defining shapes were streamlined and sleek, and the colour palette was dominated by soft neutrals such as cream and grey, assertive pastels such as peach, eau de nil and mauve, punctuated with vivid orange, red, yellow, green and black.
Art Nouveau Interior Style
Art Deco was the first completely machine-made style where advanced technology provided new materials such as plywood, chromium and first generation plastics like Bakelite and
Perspex. Furniture had rounded edges, a lacquered or highly polished finish and trims of metal or mirrored glass. Fitted cocktail bars and drinks trollies are particularly associated with this time and coffee tables arrived on the scene, an origin that is largely forgotten now as they have become so totally absorbed in every subsequent design style.
Classic Clarice Cliff
Designs strongly associated with this period include the pottery of
Susie Cooper and Clarice Cliff, the glass of René Lalique and the Lloyd Loom chairs that although they looked like cane were in fact made from spun kraft paper woven with paper wrapped wire which didn’t split, crack or succumb to woodworm.
A Reflection of the Past It’s worth taking the time to look online at the styles of these early 20th Century years as although the homes of this period lacked the single cohesive look that defines some styles, the general trend toward plainer, lighter and more practical rooms reflects a dramatic shift in decorating tastes that is so much an influence of the styling of today.
