MOTORING And for the first time Kia has fitted stop/go
technology for both manual and automatic versions for improved fuel economy when city driving. With the Eco mode, economy improves, as do the
emissions. For a car of this size fuel consumption is very good at about 45mpg on the combined cycle. Emissions are quoted at just 149g/km for the KX1 manual model. So how much then for a premium-quality previously
budget SUV? Well, the fun starts at a mouth-watering £28,795 (£5,000 below a BMW X3 or Land Rover Discovery) and rises to £41,000 (still £20,000 below an entry level Range Rover) for the plusher, all-singing and dancing KX4. It looks a good deal more expensive than it really is
and I’m confident residual values will hold-up nicely even though it is competing in a strongly badge- conscious sector. For me, this is perhaps the bargain buy of the year.
Bikes the key to road safety
Increasing the number of motorbikes on UK roads could reduce accidents and congestion, according to a leading expert. According to the latest figures, motorcyclists
account for one in every five deaths on UK roads, despite representing just one per cent of all traffic. The Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) has been working with police to find a solution. The recently-published “Motorcycle
Safety and Transport Policy Framework”, drafted by the industry in conjunction with the police,
encourages greater use of motorcycles on UK roads to improve road safety. The idea that more motorcycles on the road
improves rider safety was initially based on European data, which showed that when a greater percentage of traffic is made up of motorcycles, riders are less likely to be involved in a collision. The Belgian study, which modelled a shift from cars to motorcycles on one of the most congested roads in Europe, found that when 25% of drivers swapped, congestion was eliminated and everyone on two wheels was safer.
