UKTI still flying flag for export
The Chamber has backed moves by Government to keep UK Trade & Investment at the centre of the country’s export drive. Lord Maude announced last month that there would be a “whole-of-
Government approach to boosting British exports through a transformed UKTI”. A ‘cross-Government exports implementation taskforce’, led Business
Secretary Saijd Javid, will ensure joined-up thinking across all Government departments, with a ‘refocused’ UKTI overseeing and coordinating export performance. Mr Javid said: “To improve the UK’s export performance we need to get

the whole of Government mobilised and working towards the same goal. “By putting a refocused UKTI at the centre of a coordinated cross-
Government approach, relevant departments will share expertise to get UK businesses exporting.” Making the announcement, Lord Maude said: “We will coordinate the
energies of the whole of Government on boosting exports, sharing responsibility across departments, harnessing their deep sector knowledge, focusing on priority targets and monitoring progress closely. “UKTI will be at the heart of this work, as well as retaining its remit to attract
and support investment to the UK, but we are bringing together all of Government to play a role.” UKTI came in for serious criticism last year when Prime Minister David
Cameron announced a full review of Britain’s export drive amid predictions that it would fail to meet its £1trn target by 2020. The Chamber said the criticisms were unfair and that UKTI provided “a
vital link for firms wanting to begin exporting or those already exporting but wanting to expand into new markets”. Following Lord Maude’s announcement, Diane Simpson, the Chamber’s
Deputy Chief Executive, said: “It is absolutely the right decision that UKTI should be central to the new cross-Government export drive. “Each of its regional offices has a wealth of local knowledge which is
essential for companies seeking to secure overseas business and this is expertise that should be exploited, not cast aside, in any future export drive.”
Patron forges Panjab link
Chamber patron Nottingham Trent University has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Panjab University, one of the oldest and top universities in India. The MOU marks the beginning of
a global partnership that will include research collaborations, faculty and student exchange visits, joint conferences, workshops and schools, and the development of joint academic and research programmes.
Nottingham Trent University
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edward Peck, said: “Nottingham Trent University and Panjab University share three characteristics. Both are leading universities in important international cities. Both are comprehensive universities with a commitment to teaching and research excellence. “And both are committed to
actively engaging with our cities to support their economic and social development.”
