SKILLS Finding the path to your future

Pupils, education-leavers and young learners are being invited to pick up tips on how to give their careers a boost. As part of a national drive, and

working alongside other Chambers of Commerce, the Chamber is hosting four careers fairs over six weeks. Two-hundred-and-fifty such

fairs are being held across the country with the aim of giving youngsters aged

14-24 an insight into some of the opportunities available to them and which they might not have considered. The first of the fairs hosted by

this Chamber took place in Leicester on 4 February (after Business Networkwent to print) and over 700 youngsters were expected to turn up to get advice on careers opportunities in the local area. The second of the careers fairs

takes place in Derby on 24 February, followed by Buxton on 2 March and Nottingham on 17 March. Branded ‘Your Future’, the fairs

are funded by the Skills Funding Agency and the National Careers Service. Together, they are expected to

give 70,000 young people access to potential employers, showcase the range of career options open to them and help them to plan their future to take advantage of the opportunities presented. “These free-to-attend events

offer an excellent opportunity for young learners aged between 14- 24 to find out as much as they can to shape their career decisions now

and in the future,” said Sarah Temperton (pictured), Head of Chamber Training. Your Future careers fairs will give

young people the chance to interact with businesses and try out first-hand the activities associated with working in that industry. They will get to talk to

employed young people and attend interactive workshops to get a better idea of, and to prepare for, the world of work.

The young people will be able

to gather a variety of information on further study in the form of apprenticeships, college, university courses and more. By the end of the Your Future

careers fair young people should be able to make a fully-informed decision on their future career and have the information they need to progress.
