Jaffer aims to boost links with Uganda in new role

Friars Mill is the site of the oldest factory in the city, dating back to 1739, and, as the name suggests, was once home to a friary. Tom has worked for the Chamber since 2008 and has a background in customer service and business support. Tom previously worked at both
Barnsley & Rotherham and Sheffield Chambers, where he implemented a number of schemes including customer care plans, retail associations and, in 2007, launched the UK’s first student membership scheme.

a number of Boards, including the NHS and the University of Leicester. His main responsibilities as Honorary Consul General
of Uganda in the Midlands will include building economic, social, cultural and educational bridges, as well as encouraging bilateral trade, investment and exports for mutual benefit, adding even greater value to existing links. He said: “There is enormous potential to do so much
more for the benefit of both Uganda and the UK and I pledge to encourage individuals and organisations to work together on all fronts to help reach common goals and objectives for the benefit of everyone.” Uganda’s President, His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta
Museveni, said: “Jaffer is a longstanding friend of Uganda. He is truly deserving of this honorary role as Ambassador for Uganda in the Midlands and I wish him success in his work.” Ian Harrison, Regional Director of UK Trade &
Investment (UKTI) in the East Midlands, said: “I am delighted to hear of Jaffer’s news and congratulate him
on his honorary role. He is an asset to the East Midlands and I’m sure his new role will add even greater value, particularly to businesses with links to, or those considering establishing ties with Uganda.” The formal signing ceremony took place at Uganda
House, home to the Ugandan Embassy, in London, on Monday 14 December.
