WORKING IN CONFINED SPACES

TRANSFERABLE SKILLS VITAL TO THE WIND INDUSTRY

For some 100 years the Mines Rescue Service developed its skills base, together with considerable experience and knowledge gained from working in some of the most hostile and potentially dangerous environments imaginable, to affect the rescue of mineworkers from underground mines.

DIVERSIFICATION

In more recent years the demise of the UK mining industry has seen the organisation diversify into other sectors and this background and expertise now supports a comprehensive range of health and safety related products, training and services available to a wide range of organisations.

The company utilises the knowledge and expertise of its staff, all of whom are highly trained and qualified to assess client needs and seek sensible, practicable solutions to their health and safety issues.

RENEWABLE DEVISION

Mines Rescue Renewable is a division within the organisation that has been developed to support the renewable sector. Considerable investment has been put into a purpose built wind training centre in Crossgates, Fife, which was opened last year by Fergus Ewan MSP, Minister for Energy.

The centre has first class facilities to deliver a range of key health and safety related training courses for people employed or seeking employment within the wind sector.

RENEWABLE UK (RUK) AND THE GLOBAL WIND ORGANISATION (GWO) APPROVAL

Approved by RUK and GWO for the range of courses available, Mines Rescue Renewable are working in partnership with the energy and education sectors to provide training in the safety critical skills needed to work safely in the wind industry.

GREEN ENERGY AWARD The quality and standards of training provided were endorsed when Mines Rescue Renewable won the 2014/15 Green Energy Award for the contribution to skills category. The Centre Manager, Errol Parrish said; “We can offer realistic training in a safe environment, where the facilities consist of an actual wind turbine and a specially designed training tower. These provide our clients with the most realistic scenarios possible, enabling training to take place without the costs incurred from turbine shutdowns.”

INDUSTRY GROWTH

“We are engaging with organisations and key stakeholders across the sector to highlight the courses available to the future generation of workers in this growing industry, to help to develop skills and create job opportunities.

“All of our course are designed to meet the needs of the wind industry and include working at height, fire-fighting, manual handling, first aid, safe lifting & slinging and rescue from the hub, blade, nacelle and turbine roof. Mines Rescue Renewable can also offer bespoke courses on request of the client, always with safety, quality and professionalism at the forefront of our minds.”

APPROVED ILA FUNDING The training and certifications provided allow the progressive development of workers in the energy sector and Mines Rescue Renewable are helping to facilitate the sector by providing practical hands on experience for candidates, with all courses being approved for ILA funding.
