Specialist offshore equipment ENGINEERING SERVICES SECTION SPONSOR
As part of Royal IHC (IHC), IHC Engineering Business (IHC EB) designs and builds specialist offshore equipment for the oil & gas, submarine telecoms and renewables industries. One area of focus for the Northumberland based company over recent years has been the supply of carousel systems of various capacities for the demanding offshore flexible pipe and cable lay sectors.
CAROUSEL SPECIFICATIONS
The successful delivery of two large capacity carousels, a 7,000t reel carousel for the North Ocean 102 and a 5,000t basket carousel for the Royal Boskalis, Ndurance, led to the award of a 5,000t basket carousel for Van Oord’s Nexus, installed in early 2015.
Accommodating product diameters from 50mm to 450mm, the Nexus carousel, designed at the Stocksfield offices, measures 26m outer diameter, 6m core diameter and has a
storage height of 6.25m. For this project, the scope of supply included a loader system, deployable gangway, containerised drive suite and HPU.
UNIQUE DESIGN FEATURES The carousel incorporates a number of unique design features which improve operational efficiency and asset life. Gregg Capon, Project Engineer for IHC EB explains; “The innovative hydraulic support system works to reduce peak loads into the deck, minimising fatigue to crucial structures and extending service life.
“The system was designed to offer redundancy within the hydraulic system, which allows continued use, even with lost rollers in elevated sea states. This equates to less downtime when compared to more traditional carousels. This ultimately leads to operational benefit to our client.”
RESOURCE SUPPORT
With support from IHC’s worldwide resource, IHC EB provided engineering design and project management whilst drawing upon the skills of IHC China Support (ICS), based in Guangzhou, for fabrication and assembly. Final delivery and commissioning was completed on-site in Vlissingen, Holland.
COMBINED EFFORT
The combined effort and multinational reach of IHC meant that teams in the UK, Netherlands and China were able to work closely throughout the duration of the project, utilising a wide range of expertise and ensuring the delivery of a quality product.
At 123m in length and 27m beam, Van Oord’s Nexus is configured for installing inter-array and export cables for offshore windfarms. She has been working with great efficiency on the Gemini Windfarm project off the North Coast of the Netherlands since April 2015.
