MET MASTS

REDUCE YOUR CAPEX LEASE YOUR DATA

With met mast systems becoming more complex and more expensive to purchase and maintain, surely it makes sense to remove the Capex costs and the maintenance responsibilities altogether?

After all, you are just interested in receiving reliable and accurate bankable grade data, right?

TEMPORARY MET MAST (TMM) TMM systems are installed to provide wind developers and financiers with Wind Recourse Assessment (data) over a short time frame, typically 12 – 24 months. During that time the structure and the instrumentation installation is subjected to harsh environmental conditions; that is the idea after all…but what happens when there is a vital instrument failure?

• Who is responsible for managing the repair process?

• Why is this process so time consuming for your team?

MONITORING SYSTEM – COSTLY AND TIME CONSUMING

Typically, the client’s System Monitoring Team will spot and report the problem to the Project Manager. The Project Manager may then contact their Wind Analysis Consultants for advice.

They, in turn will investigate the problem and offer suggestions for remedial actions. The client then contacts the installer to agree rectification. The installer dispatches a team to rectify the problem(s) and forwards a report to the client.

The client sends the report to the Wind Analysis Consultants who check the system and update their report for the system. This may be repeated during the lifecycle of the system installation and can multiply across several installations for a large developer.

This of course is very costly and time consuming as typically any warranty will cover the instruments only and not the labour and the technicians.

OPERATING LEASE PLAN – A BETTER WAY?

Surely there is a better way. Wouldn’t it be better to lease the system and the necessary ongoing maintenance under an Operating Lease Plan?

This provides the opportunity to roll all the necessary design, installation, data delivery, monitoring, ongoing maintenance, insurance, de-commissioning and reporting into a simple monthly payment plan. The responsibility to provide reliable, accurate data and reporting throughout the measurement period is transferred from the purchaser to the supplier.

MORE EXPENSIVE

But this will be more expensive in the long term, right? Wrong.

For a typical installed and maintained system such as an 80m — 100m lattice met mast with a full suite of Class 1 instruments, the lease plan is cheaper over the full term.

The reason is that the supplier owns the asset which can be re-used several times. The installer owns the asset — the client owns the data.
