OVERVIEW PERFECT LOCATION

SMART SPECIALISATION AREA The North East LEP has identified renewable energy as one of the region’s four ‘smart specialisation’ areas – sectors leading rapid economic growth. The LEP is working closely with public and private sector partners to create the economic conditions for the sector to thrive.

North Tyneside Council for example, is currently transforming the former Swan Hunter shipyard in Wallsend into a hub for renewable energy, advanced engineering and offshore sectors.

The Swan's site is also home to the Centre for Innovation, an office development providing flexible accommodation for small and medium-sized companies connected to these sectors.

Supported by an £8m investment from the LEP, the 13 hectare site will become a focus for renewables creating around 1,000 new jobs.

Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Paul Watson, Economic Development and Regeneration lead for the North East Combined Authority, said: “The North East is the perfect location for offshore wind industries to grow and develop.

“The area is a hugely attractive and successful destination for inward investors with extensive collaboration networks, cutting edge research institutions and testing facilities and world renowned universities.”

The North East is well served by organisations which promote connectivity in the sector such as NOF Energy – with a membership base drawn from oil, gas, nuclear and offshore renewable sectors, it has generated £167m in new business for its members in the past three years.

Skills & knowledge base

In common with all technology and innovation driven industries, a pool of new, talented workers on stream to fill the highly skilled posts industry success creates, is vital. Newcastle College’s Energy Academy provides innovation, training and development for renewable energy technologies to help meet this demand.

FUNDING SUPPORT

As well as financial incentives on Enterprise Zone sites, there are North East funds available to businesses which create jobs and grow the economy.

The North East Investment Fund is a £55m loan fund offering investment for major infrastructure and innovative projects. Investments include new workshop and office facilities to support the offshore wind sector in Blyth.

CAPABILITY TO DELIVER “The North Eastern Core (Centres for offshore renewable engineering) has the capability to deliver the skills and knowledge required for the future of the renewable energy sector.” said Andrew Hodgson, Chief Executive of Tyneside-based SMD, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of remote intervention equipment.

“Our world class universities, colleges and private providers are geared towards delivering the engineering and offshore skills that the North East is famous for and which are a key driver of our future.”
