SPECIALIST BUSINESS CENTRES New development completion

Wirral offers the renewable industry an excellent range of opportunities for manufacturing and pre-assembly, as well as operation and maintenance bases for windfarms and R&D projects for the sector. Thanks to a clear plan and strong political will to pro- actively enable and support growth in the Offshore Wind, new developments are now becoming available for business in this sector.

CORE (CENTRE FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY)

As the only area on the West Coast of Britain

with CORE status, Wirral is playing to its huge natural advantage in the offshore wind sector, and is working hard to ensure everything is in place for renewable energy businesses to make Wirral their home by re-positioning the peninsula to harness these opportunities, carving a niche in new ‘carbon neutral’ sector.

OFFSHORE WIND

Cammell Laird, the original Northern Power House, has diversified into Offshore Wind and has already secured significant offshore wind contracts. Denmark’s DONG Energy and Germany’s RWE are investing in the region. Local firms like Bibby HydroMap (formerly Osiris Projects) play a crucial role in supporting the sector further with oceanographic mapping and surveys.

INVESTMENT

Wirral Council has recently invested £11m from the Regional Growth Fund in supporting renewable energy. This includes enabling the development of new premises for businesses involved in the off-shore wind sector, with a number of initiatives now coming to fruition.

LIGHTBOX DEVELOPMENT

One such project that is now available for new tenants is the innovative Lightbox development in Birkenhead, a £2.5 million complex of new super-energy efficient offices and warehouses in Birkenhead. The innovative new development offers real benefits to the local community and economy by providing state-of- the-art, sustainable accommodation for businesses who are leading the offshore wind sector. The development consists of six new super energy efficient commercial units, including research, laboratory and development spaces, which are now available to lease, specifically aimed at businesses in the offshore wind sector.

WIRRAL COUNCIL SUPPORT Support from Wirral Council is also bringing Turbine Business Park to fruition, which has over 50 per cent occupancy before its completion. The new development offers brand new high quality energy efficient units targeted at businesses connected to the renewable energy sector, in particular the Offshore Wind industry.

This has been made possible following an investment by the council of £895,000 from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund for resources specifically to support the local development of the offshore renewable sector and developed by Capital and Centric Plc.

This investment, and others targeted at supporting businesses operating renewable energy sector, have been undertaken to overcome a lack of local suitable business premises for the offshore sector, support local business targeting the supply chain in the off shore and renewables sector.
