Spotlight on North East of England
Harnessing the power of the wind to turn the wheels of industry and everyday life provides not just a sustainable and clean energy source but a huge opportunity for economic growth.
North East England was one of the first regions in the United Kingdom to seize the opportunities wind energy technology and its development presents.
It boasts a cohesive, credible and cutting-edge wind energy sector underpinned by innovation, superb infrastructure and a thriving supply chain, home to world-class companies and a highly skilled workforce with enterprise zone status at strategic geographic locations to stimulate investment.
BOLD DECISION BACKED BY INVESTMENT
More than a decade ago, the North East took the bold decision to invest heavily in the research and development of clean energy through the creation of the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) on the Northumberland coast at Blyth.
Over £150m has since been invested into the UK's flagship technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy.
ORE Catapult’s assets are recognised as the most comprehensive, open access facilities of their type anywhere in the world, accelerating the development, testing, commercialisation and adoption of these technologies.
It is just one facet of a burgeoning wind energy sector in the North East, a comprehensive package proving a powerful lure to new business with an outstanding support network for existing renewable energy firms.
