Vasistha’s Pose by Miriam Serow

Vasistha’s Pose, or “side plank”, is one of my fa- vorite poses. It stretches and

wrists, arms and devel- balance.

and legs ops a sense of It also strengthens

the core, fully utilizing not just the front belly, but our backs and side waists as well. Side plank demonstrates a core yogic concept of balancing Sthira and Sukha, or “steadiness” and “ease”. On and off the mat, we are continu- ally challenged to balance the effort required to achieve our goals with the ease necessary to maintain them. For me, practicing this posture is a visceral reminder of this balance.

Mermaid Pose by Deanna Nagle

Playful and graceful, mermaid is a fun and more accessible variation of One- legged King Pigeon Pose. Combining hip, heart and shoulder open- ing all in one, it promotes fluidity and spaciousness of mind, body and spirit. As an inspi- rational metaphor for life off the yoga mat, this pose reminds us to meet life’s challenges with grace. When I practice this pose I am reminded of poet Mark Nepo who writes: “Grace comes to the heart when it realizes what it is made of and what it has risen from.”

Before you’ve practiced, the theory is useless.

After you’ve practiced, the theory is obvious. ~David Williams

Upward Facing Dog by Melanie Smith

This is a powerful pose that cre- ates upper body strength and offers a wonder- ful stretch for the chest, abdomen, and hip

flexors. It creates a beautiful back- bend which strengthens the spine and promotes better breathing. It’s also one of the most commonly and repeatedly practiced poses in vinyasa flow se- quencing, which means getting it right is important! We want to feel strong and open in this wonderful pose, and learn how to practice all of our poses well aligned to prevent injury.
