the philosophy laid down in ancient texts, such as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a text authored in South Asia sometime between 200 B.C. and 500 B.C.E. These texts, meant as a reference for passing on the great tradition of yoga, offer valuable insights on the human experience, as well as a program of study for the individual seeking a deeper understanding of his or her own true nature. The physical practices of yoga, known as hatha yoga, have shown tremen- dous benefits for people seeking fitness as well as therapy for chronic ailments and injuries. Yoga also promotes the creation of a quiet, reflective space in the mind, mental clarity, focus and an overall a sense of well-being that can help alleviate anxiety, depression and other mind-body disorders. We asked the instructors from The Yoga Loft to submit their favorite poses, and tell us why these poses are well worth the practice.

Tree pose mimics a standing tree with one foot rooted into the ground and our arms extended overhead like tree branches. Tree pose is considered a standing balance pose with many variations - making it appropri- ate for anyone from beginners to advanced practitioners. The chal- lenge of tree pose is to balance on one foot, making this a good pose to develop focus and concentration. Along with developing balance, individuals are also working on strengthening their feet, ankles, legs, backs and more. Like a tree we learn to root strongly into our foundation and maintain stability as we reach for the skies.
