No matter how many years we do this job, the basics are never far away. This month, we’re going to talk about levels and a customer who could have saved thousands by having an oil filter changed.
Is Your Car ‘On the Level’?
Your car relies on fluids to make sure everything is working properly. It’s fair to say that engine fluids are the lifeblood of everything working well. In may ways, it’s like the human body. If you cut yourself and don’t stop the bleeding, you’re going to be unwell, really unwell. Don’t drink enough wáter especially during these hot summer months, you’re going to fall over! It’s the same with your car, especially in this hot weather when you’ll likely be doing longer journeys and sitting in traffic more. So it’s important that your oil, wáter, brake fluids, clutch fluid, aircon gas, even your washer bottle level are all where they should be. If you’re not sure or your car seems a bit on the warm side, pop along and we’ll quickly let you know how to get back on the level.
Now to that oil filter. Oil filters do get clogged up over time, after all, they’re there to filter out any nasties in the oil. These could be small bits of metal that flake off, or bits of tubing or plastic. And of course oil can congeal when old. The filter in question was an oil filter that supplied a turbo. From the picture you can see that it’s nothing more than a messy glob of badness. It was so bad that the turbo, starved of good oil just blew up – not the cheapest of repairs. What amazes us at Larry’s is that a new filter is around 10€.
