Donation to Cancer Care Javea

At the end of last year the well known actress and “OXO mum” Lynda Bellingham died from cancer. She had decided to stop her treatment for her cancer and had hoped to have one last Christmas with her family, sadly this was denied her. Lynda was well known in Moraira where she had a holiday home with her husband. Leigh Patterson, who lives in Gata, read on the internet of one lady’s planned tribute to hang an OXO cube on her tree at Christmas in Lynda’s memory. Leigh decided to take it one step further and create some simple baubles. She and her husband Caryl made about 80. Caryl had to help Leigh finish the last few by Xmas, as Leigh had fallen and broken her right elbow, and was in plaster from wrist to shoulder! So it was some task...... When they finished them, people were asked to make a donation at various events leading up to Christmas and hang the OXO bauble on their Christmas trees.

Leigh and Caryl were delighted to have made 110€ and felt it should go to a local cancer charity in Lynda’s memory. The photo attached shows Leigh Patterson, on the left, handing the cheque for 110€, to a member of Cancer Care.

In the first four weeks of launching their Freephone number for the English speaking community across Spain, Samaritans are pleased to announce that their call rate increased by over 60% on the same month last year.

This is excellent news for them as they are pleased to be getting the message spread wider with calls from across the whole of Spain and both the Canary Islands and the Balearics enabling them to offer support to those who need it.

They have a range of callers from young adults with problems ranging from bullying, drugs, exam pressures through to callers of all ages suffering from depression, loneliness, grief, abuse and many other problems.

They are very proud indeed to have a 24 hour telephone support line across the whole of Spain on the Freephone number 900 525 100 for the English speaking community and support for both the English and Spanish speaking communities on the email support line at pat@samaritansinspain.com.
