The summer heat and humidity seem extra high this year, but darling daughter informed me “these are not heatwaves, it’s just summer on the Costa Blanca”. After a 47 year old man died recently from heat and dehydration, spare a thought for your animals and any neighbours, especially the more elderly amongst us who can find this heat intolerable. Pop in on them and if possible offer to do any important chores that they desperately need doing, even if it is just something from the shops... after all you have to go shopping yourself.

If you don’t have air conditioning installed the heat and humidity can be punishing during the day and frustrating at night when trying to get a good nights rest - instead you can find yourself lying in a sweaty, sticky mess (yuck) with a night of tossing and turning.

Some tips for your animals, DON’T walk them in the heat of the day, you try walking on tarmac in bare feet! Remember to keep changing the water regularly with fresh, cold water – even add ice cubes to it. Wetting a blanket or better still the dog! At night try to give them a fan preferably near an open window to try and bring in the cooler breeze. See the pet’s pages for more advice.

If you are finding this heat insufferable, try sitting with your feet in a bowl of cold water, your feet and ankles have many pulse points that will give the sensation of cooling down the whole body.

Try a bowl or baking tray filled with ice and placed in front of your electric fan, as the ice melts the fan will blow the cooled air around the room.

Unplug all your electronic gadgets, even on standby many of today’s gadgets give off heat.

Make sure you drink plenty of fluids, especailly water, and instead of large, heavy meals eat small, light and frequent meals as these are less work to digest and therefore produce less body heat. BBQs are the preferred option at our house, after all who wants to be indoors with the oven or hob on? See the BBQ Shop’s latest recipe for a great twist to the burger.

Always try to sleep in cooling lightweight cotton sheets rather than polyester or those sexy satin or silk ones, the same goes for nightwear, keep it loose and cotton. Of course nude is recommended but that’s a personal choice. While talking about sleeping, do it alone and cut down on cuddling and extra body heat, I know it sounds boring especially if you opted for the nude approach! If you have a hot water bottle, for the winter nights try freezing it (don’t overfill before putting in the freezer) to give a cooling bed-friendly ice pack.

A hammock is always cooler as it allows any breeze on all sides of you, hammocks should be hung low down in the house as heat rises.

If you sleep by an open window try hanging a wet (even semi-frozen) sheet in front of the window to cool the night time breeze further.

Of course air conditioning really is the answer and we have many advertisers who offer units and installation, treat yourself, give them a call and don’t forget to mention you saw them in your favourite magazine!

Keep cool, Lesley.
