Page 36 Fireworks and pets AKIRA needs your help

Would you like to save AKIRA 150 Euros a month? That is how much it costs each month to have a rescue dog in kennels. We are desperately looking for foster homes until

the shelter is finished

December 2015 – January 2016. If you think you could help please call Louise 646 009 605 or Pam 965 731 715. Please visit www.akira-animals.com or www.facebook.com/akira.dogsanctuary.

I know I have covered this previously but with all the fiestas at the moment there are so many dogs and cats that are afraid of fireworks so I would like to repeat some tips for helping your pet deal with fireworks. * Provide a hiding place where your pet can feel safe. It can be where your pet normally goes to hide or you can prepare one in the most isolated room with a cage or a box. * Keep your pets inside and close doors, windows and cat flaps to prevent them escaping and to minimise noise. Also draw curtains. * Switch on the TV or radio to mask the noise. * Provide distractions like toys or chews. Make sure you are rewarding the dog only when he is calm, if your pet is really stressed he probably won’t accept treats or toys anyway. * Walk your dog when fireworks are not going off. * Try not to leave your pet alone. Act normally and praise calm behaviour. Don’t coddle your pet when he is fearful: petting, holding or verbally comforting an insecure dog will communicate to her that there is a reason to be scared. You will only reinforce her fearful behaviour. Ignore their behaviour and only stay beside your pet, as if the noise doesn’t exist, doing something you normally do like watch TV or reading a book. * Do not punish or yell out at your pet and try not to take him out of his hiding place. * Don’t take your dog with you to firework displays. * Behaviour modification, special techniques can be used to help change the animal’s response to the noise. * Pheromones and nutraceuticals can help, also complements like the Thundershirt. * Medication can be given but it is better consult with a specialist because not all are recommended, even some are contraindicated (calmivet, calmosedan, calmoneosan).
