outing or venue to visit? The Maria Soler Shop & Museum welcomes you with open arms!
Whether for a school trip, a U3A outing, a social networking get-together or for whatever reason the Maria Soler Bag Shop & Museum in Gata de Gorgos makes for a perfect outing. Large and airy, the shop and museum is keen to show itself off as an important part of Spanish heritage.
Formed back in 1880, this is one of the last remaining functioning factories of its type in Spain. Thetraditional workshops are still used, always respecting the original demand for high quality products but these days incorporating colourful modern designs, a wide choice of fabrics, items even made of ecological leather and skin materials.
“We have so much to show” says Maria. “We used to work with traditional materials like straw, raffia and palm leaves. We still do sometimes, but we want to show and explain how the demands of modern day consumers have influenced us to use modern materials such as canvas, pvc, cotton, vinyl, and organic textiles too.”
Soler handbags is carving a way into the future for itself. As well as being a talented textile designer Maria Soler who now heads the family business is everything you would expect of a modern European business woman. Determined to get her message across about the benefits of Spanish products compared with poor quality products available from the Far East, Maria likes using the word “quality”. “I really would like people to visit, see and understand the Museum and Shop, and then they will appreciate the difference. Our handbags are built to last and give many years of faithful service. And while our growth and success in exporting to France, Germany, Japan and the USA is evident for everyone to see, we want to show how our designs, patterns and products are incorporating the new, whilst respecting the old”.
“All groups are welcome to visit us. You will be well treated, with a free artisan tour, a glass of Mistela wine or other drink and even a free gift. Please come and help us to spread the word. And for the future, should your group desire, we can develop, design and manufacture any specific bag requirement that your group might need. For example we have produced laptop bags for businesses, satchels for schools, and bowl bags for bowls clubs. All beautifully personalised for the business, school or club, giving a real sense of pride. In fact, subject to a small minimum amount, we can pretty much produce any kind of bag in our factory, I look forward to showing you how!”
