Administrative Council supports ABU expanding services to Members


T


he 99th ABU Administrative Council was held in the historical city of Xi’an, China, on


15 May 2015. Hosted by RTPRC, the Admin Council meeting was chaired by the ABU President, Mr Cho Dae-hyun. In his brief address the ABU President noted that this year had marked the great success of ABU work over 50 years. From a small regional group of broadcasters 50 years ago, ABU has become a global industry leader representing its 275 members.


Welcoming the Councillors, Ms Ma Li, Director-General of International Cooperation Department of RTPRC, suggested three lines of cooperation for ABU members. Firstly,to use the “wireless bridge” to create a favourable cultural environment and build a community of shared benefits and consensus to strengthen the bond between the people of Asia-Pacific. Secondly,to deepen cooperation by taking a more innovative approach. She urged the Councillors to establish and improve bilateral and multilateral communication mechanisms to achieve more in news- gathering and reporting, content production, research and training. Thirdly, to take an open and inclusive approach to achieve a development of all Asia-Pacific countries.


The Councillors observed a minute of silence for the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal on 25 April. The ABU President appealed to the AC members to continue the coverage of Nepal and maintain their efforts to help the Nepalese people to overcome this great adversary.


The meeting approved the report of the Secretary-General, which covered the ABU activities since the last Admin Council in Macau in October 2014. The ABU Councillors received updated information about projects that have been launched in 2014 and

will continue to be implemented from 2016 onwards.


The Councillors reviewed the progress that has been made in increasing professional services to ABU members and expansion of service to ABU members in the Pacific and Central Asia.


The Admin Council was briefed about several new initiatives such as the Media Summit on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction in June 2014 in Jakarta and the World Summit on Media for Children in September 2014 in Kuala Lumpur and the preparations for several upcoming events in 2015.


The Administrative Council members supported the direction in which the Union is going – expanding services to


members and enhancing its standing and influence internationally.


The ABU is becoming a leading force for disaster risk reduction in the Asia – Pacific through its work with UN-ESCAP on Early Warning Systems and Disaster Risk Reduction and the growing partnership with UNISDR as a co-founder of the Film Contest on DRR in Sendai, Japan and leading the Media Stakeholder Group in the region.


ABU is also strengthening its cooperation with other unions, namely EBU and ASBU. They work together on common issues like securing spectrum for broadcasters. There is also expansion of joint activities such as the
