AVN Hands-on Training for TVTM T


he ABU News Director Mr Chae Il and Asiavision Senior Editor Tan Hockguan were in


Turkmenistan at the end of April at the invitation of the Turkmenistan government. The invitation was in conjunction with the festive events held on the occasion of the Turkmen Horse Festival from the 22-26 of April in the capital Ashgabat.


Mr Chae and Tan, representatives of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) at the festival, were also able to schedule a visit to Television Turkmenistan (TVTM), one of the television stations of the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Television, Radio Broadcasting and Cinematography. TVTM is a new member of Asiavision (AVN), the daily TV news exchange programme of the ABU.


Mr Chae and Tan met with the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Television, Radio Broadcasting and Cinematography Deputy Chairman Mr Annasahet Kakayev and other senior officials of TVTM. After a briefing by both sides, Mr Chae Il and Tan conducted a training session for staff of TVTM. The training was to enable TVTM staff to familiarise themselves with the AVN news exchange programme’s file-based/ online platform and includes hands- on procedures on accessing the AVN Akamai platform and accessing the scripts available on the ABU website.


Latest AVN Monthly Award Winners

he monthly Asiavision Award for May goes to MCOT of Thailand, with DDI of India winning in April and IRIB of Iran taking the award in March.


MCOT earned the May award for its comprehensive coverage of the Thai authorities crackdown on human traffickers.


The Thai broadcaster was been quick to provide visuals since the crackdown began in early May and it continued to provide almost daily updates on the still developing story.

The Thai crackdown began following the discovery of graves at temporary holding camps in the jungle near the border with Malaysia.


The crackdown led


to the human traffickers then abandoning thousands of migrants at sea in boats. Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand have since agreed to provide temporary shelter to the migrants rescued at sea.


A massive earthquake with the epicentre in Nepal struck on 25 April and DDI’s coverage of affected areas in the northern part of India earned it the April award.
