ABU and the International University Sports Federation FISU, enters into new partnership


Broadcasting: Time for Change” was moderated by the Chairperson of the ABU Sports Group, and Controller of CCTV Sports, Mr Jiang Heping. The panel explored challenges facing public service broadcasters against the backdrop of rapidly transforming media environment. “Mobile and social media are becoming ubiquitous, and rights fee and technical costs continue to rise,” said the ABU Sports Group Chairperson.


Amidst these changes, what is the best way for the public service broadcasters to leverage the power of sports, fulfil its mandate and ensure its limited resources are effectively utilised. The panellists comprising of successful PSB’s, the KBS Korea and CCTV China, underscored that PSBs must blend new media exposure with traditional coverage.


The conference also saw several presentations by different organisations and agencies. These include new technological developments to marketing strategies. Presentations were also made by


the host broadcasters of upcoming international sporting events like the IAAF in Beijing, and the Gwangju Universaide in South Korea.


The host of the 56th ABU Sports Group conference organised a tour for the delegates at the new CCTV broadcast centre. The imposing structure, dubbed as the new landmark of Beijing is the nerve centre of the CCTV’s operations broadcasting 24/7.


Most delegates expressed satisfaction with the conference saying relevant challenges faced by broadcasters were on the agenda. Delegates said, the conference, also provided an appropriate forum for broadcasters to network, share ideas and experiences.


The Conference at the Kerry Hotel in Beijing May, 7-9, 2015, acknowledged that the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union is on the right track working towards a vibrant Asia-Pacific broadcasting environment based on consensus, solidarity and cooperation among members.

he Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union - ABU, and FISU signed an international broadcast


rights agreement, on the sidelines of the ABU Sports Conference in Beijing. Under the agreement, FISU grants the international broadcast rights to the ABU for 2015–2017 period of FISU events.


Some of the major sporting events in the next two years include the Summer Universaide, Gwangju 2015, Winter Universaide Almaty 2017, and the Summer Universaide Taipei 2017.


The agreement was signed by the Secretary General of the ABU, Dr Javad Mottaghi and the Secretary General of FISU, Eric Saintrond.


The ABU with a membership of 278 throughout the Asia and the Pacific reaches to almost four billion audience. FISU, is responsible for the governance of worldwide competitions for student-athletes and the university games.
