2015 ABU Children’s Drama Co-production Series: High Quality Production noted

fter three years Tokyo welcomed back all producers and colleagues concerned with the production of the 12th series of ABU Children Drama Co-production.


The 1st Producers’ meeting, hosted by NHK-Japan was held from 13 to 15 April 2015.


Participating broadcasters were from: BTV-Bangladesh, EBS-Korea, IRIB-Iran, MNB-Mongolia, NHK- Japan, RTB-Brunei, RTHK-Hong Kong, RTM-Malaysia, SLRC-Sri Lanka, Thai-PBS and TVRI-Indonesia. The common theme of the series still stay, ‘Children’s Mental Growth’. The duration of each episode is 15 minutes featuring child actors aged 7 to 9 and the story has to be unique with a universal message.


The meeting began by screening of episodes from the 11th series. Out of all the great efforts, particularly noteworthy was the film from Thailand which drew a spontaneous cheer from its audience. Executive Producer Yoshinori Komiyama, from NHK – Japan, said that having visited Thailand himself to offer on-site suggestions during the 10th series, he was deeply delighted as that they came up with such high quality programme two years later.


Looking back, he considered a major improvement of programme production skills by broadcasters from Thailand, Brunei and Malaysia as the achievements gained from past 3 years. Meanwhile, programmes from Mongolia, Hong Kong, Korea and Japan had always been equipped with sense of stability.


For her part, Executive Producer in charge of EBU Children’s Drama Series, Beryl Richard said that she noticed significant

improvement in the quality of ABU Children’s Drama programmes over recent periods. “While we need to continue to raise the level of overall quality, there is no doubt that programme production capability of ABU is increasing”, she added.


Yoshinori Komiyama underlined that his work as Executive Producer at ABU commenced with the meeting in Tokyo 3 years ago and it has now come to its completion with the meeting in the Japanese capital this April. He hopes that the drama production know-how that the participating broadcasters have acquired in the past 3 years will continue to be of value to them in their programme production.


On the 2nd day, the role of Executive Producer was succeeded by Mr Yoichiro Takahashi, who is an experienced and award winning drama producer/director at NHK. All participating organizations pitched their new story ideas for 12th series. There were active discussions among producers/ directors, who were able to have a lot of input from both the Executive Producer and the participating colleagues.


ABU Programme Department would like to express its heartfelt appreciation to Mr Yoshinori Komiyama, the Executive Producer for 9th, 10th and 11th series, for his huge dedication and contribution to our members.


The second meeting for the current series is scheduled in Kuala Lumpur in July 2015. Production is expected to end by February 2016 and the exchange of episodes among the participating countries will be done by April next year.
