ABU and OIC explore avenues for Cooperation

he Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Dr Iyad Ameen Madani paid a visit in April to the ABU


Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The OIC is an international organisation founded in 1969 and consists of 57 member states. Known as “the collective voice of the Muslim world”, the OIC works to safeguard and protect the interests of its members in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony. Based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, it has permanent representatives to the United Nations and the European Union.


Dr Madani was in Kuala Lumpur to hold official bilateral talks with the Malaysian government.


The ABU Secretary-General, Dr Javad Mottaghi, through a video presentation briefed Mr Madani on the operations and activities of the ABU. The two Secretary- Generals recalled that nearly 30 countries are members of both ABU and OIC. ABU Directors of Technology, Sports and News also gave a brief overview of the main responsibilities of their respective department.


Dr Madani stated that broadcasting is very important for the OIC and would like to collaborate with the ABU in sectors like Sports, Youth-oriented events, Children and Women Programmes and Climate Change.


ABU and UNI- APRO Singapore: Cooperation strengthened

r Christopher Ng, Regional Secretary UNI-APRO Singapore paid a visit in Kuala Lumpur to ABU Secretary-General Dr Javad Mottaghi in April


and discussed different areas of cooperation.


UNI-APRO will conduct a workshop on “Safety of Journalists” and a session about Gender Equality or Women Empowerment in the forthcoming ABU Pacific Media partnership Conference that will be held from 25- 27 August 2015 in Samoa.


The organisation based in Singapore will also be present at ABU General Assembly and will participate in the session “Women With the Wave” on 28 October 2015 in Istanbul. Mr Christopher Ng will confirm its participation in two other ABU activities namely, the Tashkent Media Forum for Central Asia scheduled from 23-25 July 2015 in Uzbekistan and the ABU Media Summit on Disaster Risk Reduction to be held from 12-13 May 2016 in Phuket.


ABU and UNI-APRO will consider establishing a joint venture Annual Media Forum in partnership with IJF on safety of Journalists for ASEAN Sub-region starting from 2016 onwards.
