he property market is a source of continued fascination for most people. The importance of a well-designed and presented garden is one factor that is frequently overlooked and one that can add anything from 10 – 20% to the value of your home. When selling, if you are able to plan ahead have some

professional photographs taken of the garden when it is looking at its best. Whenever you then decide to put your house on the market you will have good external photographs. Most prospective purchasers will decide if they want to view based on photographs. • First impressions or kerb appeal are vital. Make sure that the house is easy to identify. If you have limited parking let the viewers use it and hide the bins. Mow the lawn and the edges and do the weeding. • Tidy up and de-clutter.

attractive as possible. Perhaps add one or two attractively planted pots if you need some colour, but keep it simple and not over fussy. • ‘Dress the set’ so that viewers can imagine themselves in the garden. Gardens are now seen as

outdoor rooms so treat it as such. • Give some thought as to what sort of people might buy your house and cater to their taste, particularly with reference to terraces or decks. • As new owners, don’t rush into changing the garden too quickly. • First find out what plants you have – and if you don’t know just ask for help.


• Look to see where the best spots are for the sun or shade. Check the direction of the prevailing wind and where might be sheltered. Are there any views or noise you want to minimise? • Does the garden suit your needs? Do you have enough terrace space or is the lawn too big? If not then make a wish list. • Finally,
