DART NOTES Dart Notes WHAT’S NEWS & WHAT’S NEW IN AND AROUND DARTMOUTH
10 YEARS OF NCI AT FROWARD POINT TO MANY LOCALS, IT MAY SEEM THAT THE NATIONAL COASTWATCH (NCI) STATION on the southeast extremity of the Dart estuary has been there forever but in fact, July this year (2015) marks the lookout’s 10th anniversary. Nearly 70 watchkeepers (men and women) fill the shifts that keep the station open for the main daylight hours, 365 days a year – and all of them are volunteers, trained and equipped at no cost to the taxpayer. To keep NCI Froward Point open costs over £8,000 per annum to cover fuel (with no electric- ity, power has to be generated on site), equipment and all of the other general running costs of such an organisation and all funds are sourced from voluntary contributions. NCI watch keepers are the eyes and ears along the coast for the Maritime Coastguard Agency [MCA] protecting people on land (walkers, etc.) and at sea (fisher- men and sailors) as well as the hundreds of people who enjoy our coast in the environs of the Dart estuary (anglers, kayakers, divers, etc.).

So July this year marks NCI Froward Point’s tenth anniversary. There will be a 10th Anniversary Open Weekend to celebrate at the watch station on Saturday 15th Sunday 16th
and August, when the public will be invited to come
and see what the NCI do and how they do it (and have a go at doing it themselves). Light refreshments will be available and there will be a free shuttle service between the National Trust’s Brownstone car park and Froward Point on both days between 11am and 4pm. National Trust Rangers will also be in atten- dance to support Froward Point NCI as part of their “Coastal Festival 2015” which celebrates 50 years of the Trust’s fundraising campaign “Enterprise Neptune” to acquire and protect large sections of coastline in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. So if you fancy a chance to get down to the beautiful Devon coastline, enjoy the views and visit the station to find out what goes on, make a note in your diary for 15th and 16th
August, from Brownstone car park between 11am and 4pm. REGATTA TENNIS
