A Walk on the Wild Side with artist Annie Drew One of her ambitions when she
O
nly 12 months after first exhibiting her stunning original oils at White Sails
Gallery, 24 year old Annie Drew has become something of a Dart- mouth sensation. Still at the very be- ginning of her career, a growing list of collectors make plain the promise and talent that this young Devon artist exudes. “When we first saw Annie’s wildlife
portraits she was still only 19 and they literally took our breath away.” explains gallery owner Adam Edsall. “Her up-close and incredibly detailed style of painting captures the very soul and mood of the animal com- pletely. They are incredibly calm, still pieces and then when we found out how old she was we were hooked.” Clearly Annie’s passion and inspira-
tion comes from nature, and her style developed because she liked to reveal each strand of hair, every wrinkle and as much char- acter from the original animal as possible. As Annie explains, “Vincent Van Gough once said ‘it’s not the language of paint- ers you should listen to but the language of nature. The feel- ing for the things themselves, for reality, is more important than the feeling for pictures”.
started was to produce work that didn’t require paragraphs of annota- tion. “I’ve always believed that if it has to be explained, it isn’t working. “Art that speaks for itself” became my goal and I like to think I’ve managed that’. Five years on and the demand this
year for her originals from White Sails has been unprecedented, with some London Galleries now beginning to take an interest. Fortunately, all of her work is also available as hand-signed limited edition prints and the gallery hopes that the relationship with Annie can be a long and success- ful one. Thank goodness then that Annie never took heed of what she was told in college – that “painting from nature is a useless talent”. As Adam concludes “I think you’ll agree that a world without a skill such as this would be a poorer one and we
