International support to be stepped up » Review leads to better service for members

group of Glasgow Chamber members has carried out a review of Chamber activity in

supporting international trade and examining ways it can be improved. Glasgow Chamber already has

significant activities supporting its members in the supply chain for international trade through certificates of origin and support for the logistics involved in geting your goods into market. But it has surveyed members,

benchmarked its service with other Chambers and reviewed the work of other agencies such as SDI, UKTI and the British Chambers of Commerce Overseas Business

Network to assess how Glasgow Chamber could add to its service. Te report has been going

through the Board and Council of Directors of Glasgow Chamber and will result in increasing the support Glasgow Chamber can give members to access markets. Glasgow Chamber’s offering

includes help with market selection and identifying the nature of your overseas presence. Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive

of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “International trade is a natural area for Glasgow Chamber to focus

on given that the Chamber network is almost worldwide. “Tere have been some

important developments in recent years, notably British Chambers’ expansion of its overseas office network which means that there is an enhanced offer within your Chamber’s network to help you achieve your goals in overseas markets. “Te expansion of this area will

be rolled out over the next few weeks and months. Please do not hesitate to tell us if there are things that you want help with in

accessing overseas markets and growing exports. “We know that we still have a lot

of work to do to grow our exports. We are still heavily dependent on a limited number of markets within the European Union, but we have in the city some fantastic examples of companies – in the whisky industry such as Edrington and Grants; in the engineering industry such as Weir’s, Howden and Tales; and niche players such as Linn, Trespass and Barr + Wray – which have huge experience of operating overseas. “Many of these businesses have

offered to help new players to break into markets they are already in.”
