Economic growth
City Deal seeking £3 billion in private investment
Lord Willie Haughey and the Glasgow and Clyde Economic Leadership Board he chairs are beginning work seeking £3 billion in private sector investment to add to public investment in the City Deal. The task of attracting
investment will be key to gaining the maximum impact from the City Deal, which covers the Glasgow City Council area plus that of seven neighbouring local authorities. Lord Haughey updated
members of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce President’s Club at a recent dinner.
The City Deal work will seek
to learn many of the lessons and build on the best practice of the achievements of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. All of the City Deal projects will be available to bid for via an online portal similar
to that operated in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games. Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive
of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are huge supporters of the City Deal and will be engaging fully with the process and doing all we can to gain the largest possible economic benefit for the city region.”
Glasgow to host major climate change conference
Glasgow has scored another major success by winning its bid to host the third European Climate Change Adaptation Conference (ECCA) in 2017.
This leading event will attract
more than 1,000 delegates from the UK, Europe and around the world. The win means Glasgow joins
Copenhagen in Denmark and Hamburg in Germany as hosts. This is the first time the event has come to the UK. The 2017 conference is being led by three EU-funded projects: IMPRESSIONS, HELIX and RISES-AM. Dr Paula Harrison, Co-ordinator
of the IMPRESSIONS project based at the University of Oxford, said: “Climate change presents a wide range of impacts and risks for the European economy, society and environment. We need robust strategies and solutions to adapt. “The conference provides the leading forum for sharing amongst science, policy, practice
and business communities. We look forward to working with the experienced local team to deliver a conference in Glasgow that inspires real action to adapt to climate change.” Climate resilience is at the core
of decisions shaping investment in the city and transforming communities. It is this pioneering work that has won Glasgow the conference. Gordon Matheson, Leader
of Glasgow City Council, Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and Chair of Sustainable Glasgow, said: “Glasgow has strong ambitions for a greener future and to be a European leader in environmental sustainability.
“Sustainable Glasgow is the
cross-sector partnership to take on this challenge. We aim to use the tremendous opportunities now available to us to become a resilient city that adapts to the challenges of climate change.”
European Sports Championships
City co-host for ‘new and exciting’ sporting event
Glasgow has notched up more sporting success with the city having been chosen along with Berlin to co-host the European Sports Championships in 2018. Many of the venues that
took centre stage in the 2014 Commonwealth Games will again be in the spotlight, with the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Strathclyde Park and Tollcross International Swimming Centre hosting the cycling, rowing and swimming events. Sports governing bodies have
created this joint event from a series of individual competitions with a view to maximising audiences and sponsorship opportunities. In addition to diving and triathlon
events, it is also possible that a golf tournament at Gleneagles could be added to the programme. Almost 3,000 athletes will
compete in the Scottish events with a further 1,500 taking part in the Berlin-based competitions, with the combined event taking place across about 12 days.

Swimming events will take
place in the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, diving and synchronised swimming at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh, with open water swimming to be held at Loch Lomond. Track cycling will take place at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, cross-country cycling at the Cathkin Braes Mountain Bike Trails and road cycling will take place on the streets of Glasgow with a BMX track to be built in the city for that event. Glasgow City Council Leader
Gordon Matheson said: “I am delighted that Glasgow has been chosen by such prestigious sporting bodies to stage this new and exciting event in partnership with our friends in Berlin. We have been chosen because of our excellence and innovation, and our proven ability to stage world-class events. “Not to mention, of course,
our citizens’ world-famous warm welcome, so superbly demonstrated during the Commonwealth Games, described as the best ever staged.”
