CHANGES TO MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

Cath Macneil, Managing

Consultant, QMI

Management Systems are changing, and hopefully it will mean that it is easier to integrate all the management systems that any organisation might consider putting in place, making their business more efficient and legally compliant. The mechanism behind the

current changes is a document called Annex SL, a document produced by one of the ISO Technical Management Board’s Joint Technical Co-ordination Group, for those who write and update standards. It is a framework for a generic management system, putting all the common parts of a “management” system together and allowing space for the specific technical detail that different management systems might require. The challenges that businesses face currently

with regards to the differences in what is required by internal audits, for example, should be a thing of the past. The current standards have many common threads, such as management responsibility, document control, record keeping, training, competence and awareness, internal audits, corrective and preventive action. The challenge that businesses

face is that the wording in each of the standards is slightly different, leading to confusion and disagreement between professionals. This new, common framework should allow them all to work together harmoniously. The generic framework will also mean a common numbering system, which will allow for professionals to cross train more

easily, which in turn should save businesses money and time. It will mean that ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environmental) and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety) will use the same language, bringing commonality to all.
