Our future industries
I am sure that everybody is now aware of two major investments in the city that have already opened for businesses, even if they have not had their official openings. They are key parts of a new story for Glasgow in building the advanced industries of the future. As Bruce Katz of the Brookings
Institute has shown, where there are cities that have academic research and development, innovation and a high level of productivity, that is increasingly where advanced industries are being located. Those advanced industries in the US are now being focused on a smaller number of major cities and they are prime movers of regional and national economic competitiveness there. The two investments opening in Glasgow suggest that it has every reason to be confident about being a city that shares those characteristics.
The two developments are, of course, the
opening of the University of Strathclyde’s Technology & Innovation Centre and the South Glasgow University Hospital.
The Hospital houses clinicians, academics and businesses in what is going to be one of the largest critical care centres in Europe. It will also host the ground-breaking Centre for Stratified Medicine, which could change the way that healthcare is conducted, creating a more personalised
form of medicine. The centre will be using Scottish
Funding Council resources and, we hope, those of the UK Government’s Department of Business Industry and Skills to expand its academic, clinical and commercial
opportunities for Scotland to grow its position in stratified or personalised medicine. The centre has moved from Thermo Fisher Scientific’s facility at Inchinnan. It will host some

truly innovative businesses, including Aridhia, David Sibbald’s health informatics company, as well as Thermo Fisher. At the same time Strathclyde University is opening the Technology & Innovation Centre, housing academic and commercial collaborative research activities such as the Weir Advanced Research Centre and the Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics. It will look at a variety of topics, such as energy systems, future cities and advanced pharmaceuticals, but the really interesting thing is that it’s doing innovation in a different way. In the same way that the stratified medicine
centre is bringing together existing business and academics to tackle practical problems, the innovation centre is also designed to encourage new forms of partnership. Instead of relying, as we have done in the past, on spinouts, valuable though they are, and commercialisation through licensing agreements, important though that is, this is an open innovations system. The university is opening its doors to business to allow them to work collaboratively on research. As a result of these amazing investments there is the beginning of two organically grown new innovation districts for Glasgow, based round these facilities. It is the start of Glasgow maturing into one of those cities that Brookings describes as a city of advanced industries.
