City Deal to unlock opportunities for Glasgow businesses

12 14

The theme of this issue is the wave of innovation that we are currently seeing in Glasgow. And you will find here various articles that reflect that drive for innovation. One of the most innovative

developments in the city region over the last year has been the arrival of City Deal in Scotland. While English cities have been

forming city deals for some time, this was something that was assumed could not be applied to Scotland. However, Glasgow City Council and surrounding authorities worked together to secure the £1.13 billion funding in infrastructure, skills and innovation, notably the Centre for Sensors and Imaging Systems at the New South Glasgow University Hospital. We met with

Lord Haughey who has been appointed the Chair of the Glasgow and Clyde Valley Economic Leadership Board. Lord Haughey explained to

members of our President’s Club how the City Deal is progressing – it is in its early stages of development and that the City Deal Board is opening the doors for business engagement. Your Chamber will certainly be taking up the offer of engaging enthusiastically in supporting the work of the board in delivering the 20 projects that make up the City Deal programme of work, including the rail link to Glasgow Airport. Lord Haughey’s role in helping

the elected authorities to deliver that programme includes securing the £3 billion worth of private sector investment that’s expected to sit alongside the City Deal’s project work. Lessons are already being

learned in the delivery of the City Deal from the successful delivery of the Commonwealth Games – for example, all projects that are let under the City Deal will go through the same kind of open tendering portal that was used for the Commonwealth Games. That means that Chamber members and companies across the region will have the opportunity to bid for business as each of the projects comes to delivery. This is hugely welcome and shows the strategic learning that the city has gone through in the last seven years in delivering the Commonwealth Games. We also are delighted to recognise now that the work of our President Club’s Away Team is flourishing. We have had visits from several members of the

Away Team – senior business figures overseas who have

an interest in Glasgow’s economy.

For example, Kenneth Donnelly, Global Risks Analytics Director of the Bank of America, visited us and joined in the discussion with Lord Haughey on the City Deal. He has countless contacts in New York through the Bank of America, many of whom could be useful in attracting that £3 billion that Lord Haughey is looking for. This is a great example of the President’s Club Away Team in action; something we are working hard to expand. We think that the City Deal is very

important to the economy of the city region and that the impact could be very great indeed with around 29,000 jobs created. We are hugely supportive of the City Deal and encourage all those concerned to do what they can to deliver its full potential.
