CHAMBER NEWS

G

lasgow Chamber of Commerce has enjoyed global recognition aſter being selected as the sole UK finalist in the 2015 World

Chambers Competition. Te Glasgow Chamber entry is one of five

finalists in the ‘Best Job Creation and Business Development Project’ category in the prestigious competition and will compete for a trophy at the ceremony, which is taking place in the Italian city of Turin on 12 June. Overall applications were received from 39

countries with Belgium’s Voka Chamber of Commerce being the only other European entrant to reach the list of finalists. Candidates in this category had to meet

demanding criteria, having to have developed a project that boosted growth opportunities for Chamber member companies or have contributed to job creation in the local community and in turn created long-term value for business and wider benefit to society. It was Glasgow Chamber’s initiatives to

tackle youth unemployment, led by the Youth Employment Action Group (YEAG), that earned the admiration of the judges. Established to address the issue of youth

unemployment, the YEAG is made up of 15 of Glasgow’s biggest employers and it gathered evidence and presented a report outlining key recommendations to support an increase in the numbers of young people (age 16-24) accessing and sustaining employment. Te report highlighted the benefit both to the young people themselves and to improving the efficiency and competitiveness of the city’s

business sector. A key recommendation was a call to establish a network of business sponsors in each of the 30 secondary schools located within the city, while also embedding employability and sector-skills learning into school curriculums. Te YEAG also recommended a campaign

to support the recruitment of mentors for disadvantaged young people. It launched Inspiring500, a campaign

commited to recruiting 500 volunteers from the business community to mentor young people who are in the care system. Glasgow Chamber’s entry was also selected

because of its launch – at the same time as the YEAG – of Workforce Solutions, a one-stop shop for all issues relating to recruitment and employability. Workforce Solutions, which is free of

charge for all Glasgow Chamber members, helps connect employers with potential funding opportunities to take on new staff as well as offering free advice about the overall

process and technicalities of taking on new staff. Alison McRae, Projects Director of

Glasgow Chamber, said: “Tis is great news for Glasgow! We are absolutely delighted to make it to the top five finalists in the ‘Best Job Creation and Business Development’ category. “Being the only UK Chamber of

Commerce to feature as a finalist across all the awards is a tremendous achievement and one we are immensely proud of. “We are very grateful to all the businesses

who have shown such a high level of commitment to this important agenda for our city so far and this nomination is a recognition of all the work done to date.”
