CHAMBER CHAT
With Isabella Miller, Head of Branch, John Lewis Glasgow and Director, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce
BUSINESS Describe your role/job? As Head of Branch, my role is to lead John Lewis Glasgow’s 500 Partners in delivering outstanding customer service in our co-owned business.
What skills do you bring to the table/are required in your role? The most important part of my role is leadership. I need to set a clear vision for success and motivate and inspire the team to deliver our shared goals. The purpose of our business is the happiness of our Partners though their worthwhile and satisfying employment in a successful business. It is my job to ensure this happens at John Lewis Glasgow.
What has been your career high point? The high point of my career was becoming a Head of Branch. Glasgow is the fourth branch that I have led; each one has been very different and offered me new challenges.
What’s the best thing about Glasgow Chamber of Commerce? As a newcomer to Glasgow, the Chamber has been fantastic at enabling me to get to know the key businesses and people in the city, and to understand what makes Glasgow tick.
What one thing would you wish for Glasgow in the future? To remain a vibrant, accessible and exciting city centre that everyone loves living in or visiting.
PERSONAL What do you do to relax at the weekend? I love spending time fishing with my husband and swimming with my two kids in Loch Ard, but not necessarily all at the same time!
What is your favourite city outside the UK and why? I love Florence as it is beautiful, romantic and has incredible food.
Name your favourite book, film and album One Pot Cooking by Georgina Fuggle – the whole family takes it in turn to cook from it. All the food is delicious and there is only one pan to wash.

The Shawshank Redemption – I love it just as
much every single time that I watch it. Queen’s Greatest Hits – there has never been a
greater performer than Freddie Mercury. He was a truly incredible talent.
What is your most humbling experience? As a student in Aberdeen, I volunteered to help at the psychiatric hospital. The work that the professional team did there to support the patients was beyond compare.
If you could host a dinner party with four guests, who would you choose (two living, two dead)? Annie Lennox because she hails, as I do, from the north east, and she is also talented and outspoken about her beliefs; my dad, he met Annie Lennox and really admired her; John Spedan Lewis, who established the John Lewis Partnership and left a great legacy for everyone who continues to work here; and Joanna Lumley, to bring humour and a little mischief to the dinner party.
