McKeen Productions was the main supplier of sound systems for many big name acts when they came to town. This could sometimes lead

to problems, as Doug remembers when The Who played the first rock concert ever at the Civic Centre. “This was back in the days

when the band was famous for smashing all their gear at the end of the show. We had just bought brand new mics and stands, and I was worried about it all being ruined. “The Road Manager assured

me this wouldn’t happen, but sure enough, in the mayhem at the end of the show, the stands were all bent and the mics were tossed into the audience and gone forever. “So when the band left the

stage we came up with plan B. We took their guitar amps and hid them under the stage, and in their haste to pack up and head to Montreal for the next gig, they didn’t notice. “The next day the Road

Manager called me and asked if we saw the amps. I said, ‘The Who? Never heard of you!’ I think he got the message. We sold the Who’s amps and bought new mics”. In the years that followed,

Doug McKeen Productions / Electronics provided the sound systems for most of the big rock shows in town. That included the legendary Jim Hendrix Experience show at the Capitol Theatre in March 1968 and Cream the next month. The latter concert was so

loud it literally “deafened” Doug in one ear, and it was then he decided to sit out the big concerts. But easing into retirement

is not Doug McKeen’s forte. McKeen Electronics continued, as did his association with McKeen’s IGA in the Glebe and the Glebe continued on page 67
