wooden boats It promises to be an exciting summer on
the Rideau Canal this year with two forces combining efforts to get antique and classic boat enthusiasts’ attention. The Rideau Ferry Yacht Club and the
Manotick Classic Boat Club are hooking up with back-to-back events in August. The big event is the yacht club’s regatta
Aug. 15–16, which, for the first time since the club’s resurrection in 2007, will be holding sanctioned races on Lower Rideau Lake. The regatta crew practically did back
flips when they heard the CanAm Canadian championship for flat-bottom boats was coming. These are boats that push 100 mph (160 km), love choppy water and have a tendency to thrill a crowd with their sometimes death-defying flips. On Aug. 8, Manotick’s boat club will be
spreading the word on woodies. That club has moved its show out of its home town to go where the woodies are – the Rideau Lakes. Portland, on Big Rideau Lake, is hosting
that show. That club will also be providing the parade boat for the Rideau Ferry folks. Buoy oh Buoy oh Buoy will be doing three laps of the regatta’s circuit for each of the countries represented: Canada, the United States and Australia. Ever wonder why these old boats still
exist? Who owns them? Bounder decided to ask some of the
owners, racers, builders and refurbishers why wood flows through their veins. Scott Cameron is vice-commodore of
the Rideau Ferry Regatta. His recollection doesn’t go back to 1897 when the regatta started, because he’s only 57, but it goes
