An incredible Irish journey By JOHN AMRSTRONG


When I think of Ireland, the first things that come to mind


are Guinness, lush landscape, rolling green hills, castles, Irish Music, and of course, Shamrocks. So when we started planning our motorcycle trip to Ireland,


I was amazed to find out just how motorcycle-friendly Ireland is.


John May and I started talking and pre-planning this trip


while we were in Tennessee on another motorcycle trip in 2013. We wanted to ride around the coast of Ireland, take in the Irish hospitality, and visit our roots. We spent time on the internet learning about Northern


Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and places to ride and visit. We joined various motorcycle forums to meet local Irish riders and ask questions. When we located a dealer who rents or, as they say in Ireland, “hires a motorcycle”, we arranged and purchased our flights. We flew from Ottawa to Heathrow and then on to Belfast.


Belfast Honda was the dealer of choice due to the size of bikes and rental rates we wanted. The dealer, David Allen, helped us decide what type of motorcycle we should ride. He and his staff gave us advice on planning our trip. David arranged for us to be picked up at our hotel and taken


over to the dealership. We chose the 700cc Honda Transalp, which is an adventure-style bike. These bikes are quite a bit smaller than the Concours 1400 that I ride, or John’s Street Glide, but they were the perfect bikes for the type of riding and roads we were going to experience. We wanted smaller bikes that we could handle easily, because we would now be riding on the other, or “wrong”, side of the road. The bikes came
