LIFE continued from page 25
during my golf games over the winter. A few casts and I had a swirl at my rig, but I missed what I thought was a good size fish. Another cast in the same spot
A couple of guys who were watching
from the 12th green and putting for birdie were more interested in our next few casts. Not long after that, Brandon, standing next to me, had a huge hit; and after a few minutes landed a whopping six pound largemouth. My heart skipped a beat. I hoped I would be next. Chris was having no success at all,
frothing up the water with cast after cast and color after color. We got a few more decent-sized fish and decided to head to the pond at the 14th hole. After 15 minutes with no success, we headed across to the 16th hole. I had a good feeling about this spot because I had seen a few bass there
and wham! I got smashed and up out of the water came this huge bass. A couple of minutes of fighting and three good drag straining runs, and I brought the beast to shore. The boys, grinning ear to ear,
couldn’t believe their eyes as I lipped the bass and held it up for a picture. The 7lb.1oz. fish is the largest bass I have ever caught. I slowly let her go back to the
nest with hopes for a chance at it next year. We stayed there and fished a bit longer; and 10 minutes later, I got another solid hit that seemed harder than the first one. After a giant swirl, another big bass spit the hook and was gone.
We fished a couple more spots
on the way back to the clubhouse with a little success. It was fun to watch the faces of the golfers as they played near us while we cast for bass. When we got back to the
clubhouse, I thanked Brandon and Chris for a few great hours of enjoyment with the promise of coming back next year and doing it again. Oh yeah, Chris did catch one
bass, the smallest of the day – at six ounces. After the bass fishing
experience, I now realize that I can spend a large portion of my winter away, doing my two favourite things in life: fishing and golfing. And I can do them in the same place: Pebble Creek. Retirement is such a wonderful
thing.
