Living the sweet life

By his own reckoning, Dave Kalil has been working continuously for 40 years. For a civil servant or a business owner, that record might be fairly impressive,


but not outstanding. But Dave Kalil is not a civil servant or business owner. He’s a musician. While many play music for money, it is only the select handful that makes a


career of it while still living in Ottawa. If Bruce Cockburn had decided to stay in Ottawa, he’d probably be driving a cab at night to supplement the meager earnings of a folk singer. Maybe Alanis would be busking tables in the market. No matter how great the talent, you have to make ends meet. Dave Kalil does have a second job. In fact it’s almost as cool as his first one,


but we’ll get to that in a bit. First of all, let’s flash back to 1976, when Dave decided to be an entertainer. He had taken the obligatory piano lessons as kid and did the school talent


shows right up to university; and, although he was a shy kid, Dave found he loved to get up in front of a crowd and play. His first pro gig was at J’s Steakhouse. They were looking for a Monday night

“Piano Man”, and Dave passed the audition with a version of Barry Manilow’s Mandy. Dave describes that period as a true “Piano Man” experience. He remembers “John at the bar, and Bruce over there, hiding from his wife”.
