After that gig, Dave moved
downtown to the famed Nozzle on Rideau Street, where he began a musical relationship with a singer- songwriter named Steve Nesrallah. As a duo, Kalil and Nesallah ruled
the local acoustic music scene from the late 70s to early 80s, fitting in perfectly with the soft-rock sounds of the day. Their set list included Loggins and Messina, Dylan, Elton John and Billy Joel, along with a solid set of originals. Those originals would be the basis of their album, “Transition”, which today can be found in the bins at Thrift Stores across Ottawa. (And yes, I did see one last week!) By the early 80s, Dave Kalil was
once again a solo entertainer, packing in crowds at The Saucy Noodle, Whispers, The New Edinburgh Pub and other clubs around town. It was during one uncharacteristically “bad night” at Whispers, with an inattentive crowd, that he found his second love.
That night Dave Kalil decided
that he needed a fallback in case this music thing petered out, so he decided to be golf pro. That’s right. Not a golfer, but a full-fledged golf pro.
He didn’t consider the fact he
hadn’t picked up a club before the age of 36. He loved the game, and working nights offered the perfect opportunity to play a couple of rounds a day in the summer. Three years later, Dave Kalil was
a fully accredited golf pro. He has been the Head Teaching Pro at the prestigious Hunt Club Golf Course for the past 12 years. This guy must have had fairy dust
sprinkled on his cradle. “I’m really lucky to have fallen
into two things I really love to do”, he says. You think so? So it’s golf by day and music by
night for Dave Kalil. While he still does solo gigs, most of his regular time is spent as one half of “Dueling Pianos”, a show he does with
keyboard prodigy Tyler Kealey. Dave remembers holding “12
or 13” auditions to find the perfect partner for the act at the old Stoney Monday’s bar on York Street. “This scrawny, red-haired kid
