Atlantic City, New Jersey
There are few beach resorts that are as storied and famous as Atlantic City. It is home to the streets for which the properties are named in the original version of the board game Monopoly. Atlantic City is the birthplace of saltwater taffy and was home to the first ever the Miss America Pageant. It became the first U.S. city outside of Las Vegas to allow casino gaming. Yet, for all of its firsts and fame, Atlantic City is quickly becoming known more for its meetings than anything else.
"America's Northeast Business Address," as it is quickly becoming known, Atlantic City is still home to its well-known streets, saltwater taffy, the Miss America Pageant (despite its brief departure from the city) and casino gaming. But now it has added a whole new dimension to its offerings, and meet- ings here are setting the bar high.
According to James T. Wood, FCDME, chief executive officer for Meet AC, this resort is growing into a meetings mecca because it has so much to offer - and it just keeps getting bet- ter. "Atlantic City’s world famous boardwalk spans continuous- ly over five miles, and there are plans to expand it further. Atlantic City’s eight casino hotels, along with several non-gam- ing hotels, offer a variety of views, including beachfront and Atlantic Ocean water views."
Wood continued, "In the heart of Atlantic City’s tourist district is the 109-store Tanger Outlets - The Walk. Steel Pier is 1,000-feet long, and built on it is a theme park full of thrilling rides for all ages. The Playground Pier is the newest addition to Atlantic City, which will be fully operational by year's end. This new pier rests over the Atlantic Ocean and will serve as a 464,000-square foot, self-contained entertainment venue that includes high-end retail, eight live entertainment clubs and restaurants, and even a 50,000-person oceanfront concert space. It also will house a bowling alley, swimming pool and a sports bar called Varsity Club."
In addition, Atlantic City has a growing arts and culture scene that includes a number of festivals and events throughout the year, which utilize the city's beach and waterfront environment. All tolled, Atlantic City boasts a combined guest room invento- ry of 15,630-rooms. This includes both casino hotels and non- gaming hotels. The four largest properties are: the Borgata and Water Club at 2,800 rooms; Harrah’s Atlantic City at 2,587 rooms; Tropicana Atlantic City at 2,129 rooms; and Trump Taj Mahal at 2,032 rooms.
"Each of our hotels and casino properties have meeting and banquet space," noted Wood. "Harrah’s is adding a 125,000- square foot conference center that is set to open by September 1, 2015. Resorts International is adding an addi- tional 12,000-square feet of conference space, which is set to open by the end of 2015. The Atlantic City Convention Center offers nearly 500,000-square feet of exhibit space and over
