Dunblane Primary School - Primary 5 Excursion to
Discovery Point in Dundee
by Isabelle Wood
We went on our school excursion because our topic was “Explorers.” We went on the day of Halloween.
When we got there a man called Brian took us into the Polar room.
There
were lots of pictures of maps on the wall and it showed where all the science bases were. The coldest temperature ever recorded was minus 89 degrees by a Russian team but scientists think there
could have been colder temperatures recorded. Brian let us try on the clothes that they would have worn in the old days and let us compare them to what we would wear nowadays.
On the ship we got to go on the bridge and we saw the steering wheel. When we went under the decks we went into the sail room where all the spare sails were kept. There were sound effects of the engine. It was really noisy and we saw all the rooms where the men slept. The captains got their own room and we found out that if someone needed an operation they would do it on the dining room table. The ship was amazing.
We saw lots of stuffed penguins. There were lots of different rooms. One room was all about outside and the Antarctic. We also saw the real skis that they wore and all of their clothing they wore to protect them from the weather.
I really enjoyed it and my favourite part was the ship. I would really like to go back and take my family with me.
